ACADEMICPROGRAMS AdvancedCourses: Advancedcoursesaredesignedforacademicallyadvancedstudents.Theymoveatanacceleratedpaceandstudytopics ingreaterdetailascomparedtothestandardcollege‐prepcourses.Alladvancedcourseshaveprerequisiteconditions forplacementinsuchcourses.

AdvancedPlacement(AP)Courses: APcoursesareequivalenttoafirst‐yearcollegelevelcourse.SuccessfulcompletionoftheAPNationalExamattheend of the course can result in the student receiving college credit at many colleges. Please note: Semester final exam exemptionswillnotapplytoAdvancedPlacementclasses.

Off‐CampusCoursePolicy: StudentsinterestedintakingcoursesoutsideofDCHSshouldconsultwiththeircounselor.Off‐campusclasseswillbe allowedonlyifthecourseisnotofferedatDCHS.

GuidanceCurriculum: All students will be required to complete State‐mandated guidance curriculum online. Topics covered will include: careerinterestsandassessments,four‐yearcourseplans,andcollegeinformation.

HealthyKidsActStudentPhysicalActivity/CPRInformation: Physicalactivityrequirement–Statelawrequiresthatallstudentsinaccreditednon‐publicschoolsingrades6‐ 12 engage in 120 minutes of physical activity each week. This can be accomplished through any combination of PE classes,classroomactivities,school‐sponsoredathleticco‐curricularprogramming,fineartsco‐curricularprogramming involvingphysicalactivity(cheerleading,showchoir,marchingband,etc.),aswellasnon‐schoolsponsoredactivities. CPRrequirement–StatelawrequiresthatallstudentsparticipateinaCPRtrainingprogramthatcouldleadto CPRcertification.However,achievingcertificationstatusisnotrequiredofthestudents.Onlinetrainingwillnotfulfill therequirement.Itwillbetheparents’responsibilitytoseethatthisrequirementiscompleted.Ifenoughstudentsin PEand/orHealthclassesareinneedofCPRtraining,itwillbeofferedinthoseclasses.Additionalclasseswillbeoffered periodicallythroughouttheyear.OtheroptionsforCPRtrainingarelistedontheDCHSwebsite.Thetrainingcanbe fulfilledbeforethestudentisenrolledatDCHS.CompletionverificationshouldbesubmittedtoStudentServices. ProjectLeadtheWay(PLTW): PLTWisanon‐profitorganizationfocusedonintroducingandpreparingstudentsforengineeringandtechnicalcareers of the future. Courses provide a high rigor, project‐based curriculum aimed to instill problem solving, teamwork, communication,andleadershipskillsinstudentsaswellashelpthembuildthemath,science,andtechnologyskillsto prepareforandsucceedintomorrow'scareers.Studentsmayreceivecollegecredit.Seepage7formoreinformation.

ReadingAcrosstheCurriculum(RAC): Allstudentswillberequiredtoreadtwobookseachyear.Inthefirstsemester,theywillparticipateina“book‐read” programinwhichtheschoolselectsabookforeachgradelevel.Assessmentofthereadingandbook‐focusedactivities throughoutthecurriculumwilloccurinthefirstsemester.StudentswillberequiredtoreadasecondRACbookoftheir choosing(fromtheschool’sRAClist)inthesecondsemester.

AlternativeRAIequation: (3XACTcompositescore) + (30XhighschoolGPA) + (5Xnumberofhighschoolcorecourses*) AlternativeRegentAdmissionIndexScore Freshmanapplicantswhoachieveatleasta245RAIscore,andwhomeettheminimumnumberofhighschoolcourses required by the Regent universities, will qualify for automatic admission to any of the three Regent universities. Freshmanapplicantswhoachievelessthana245scoremayalsobeadmittedtoaspecificRegentuniversity;however, eachRegentuniversitywillreviewtheseapplicationsonanindividualbasisandtheadmissiondecisionwillbespecificto eachinstitution.

COURSEOFFERINGPOLICY This guidebook lists all the courses currently being offered for the 2015‐2016 school year. However,all classes listed maynotnecessarilybeofferedintheschoolyear.Thedecisiontoofferacourseismadebytheadministrationandis determined, in part, by student interest, enrollment, and available faculty. Furthermore, the number of sections and seatsforacoursemaybelimited.Thiscanresultinstudentsbeingunabletoenrollinaparticularclass.

COURSECHANGEPOLICY Studentsmaydropaclassduringthefirstfiveschooldaysofasemester.Sinceallstudentsarerequiredtotakeseven classes,anydroppedclassmustbereplacedwithanothercourse.Enrollmentinareplacementclasswillbeallowedonly ifroomisavailable.Courselevelchangesforstudentswhoaremisplacedwillbeallowedattherecommendationofthe current teacher in consultation with the student’s parents and counselor. Students will not be allowed to change classesinordertoswitchteachersortoraisetheirgrades/GPA.
