Is it worth getting coins PCGS certified? ›

If coins have been certified by PCGS or NGC they may be traded site unseen with confidence in their grade and authenticity. Collectors and investors no longer need to be rare coin experts to safely buy and sell classic U.S. coins.

Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) is the most respected name in third-party coin certification. By establishing a universal grading standard, PCGS has paved the way for coin enthusiasts to enjoy buying and selling coins with confidence.

While both services are highly respected and offer a guarantee of authenticity, PCGS is generally considered to be the industry standard for grading rare and valuable coins.

In fact, PCGS encounters only about 25 counterfeits per 10,000 coins, or an average rate of one quarter of 1 percent (0.25 percent).

Since 1986, PCGS has been the industry standard for the authentication and grading of rare coins. Coin grading and authentication emerged as a solution to rampant counterfeiting and coin doctoring in the collectible coin industry.

PCGS offers two different ways to submit coins either by (1) joining the Collectors Club or (2) going through a PCGS Authorized Dealer.

Occasionally a coin will come into the PCGS Grading Room that simply isn't eligible for grading. A No-Grade coin might be one that is artificially toned, abrasively cleaned, has very large scratches, has been altered, or has been repaired.

Throughout the entire time a coin is at PCGS our computer system tracks it and can tell us exactly where it is.

Will PCGS grade dipped coins? ›

This is perhaps the most frustrating of all the No Grades, because subtle cleaning is often difficult to detect in less-than-optimal grading conditions. "Dipping" (the removal of toning with a chemical bath) is not considered cleaning under this definition, unless it has been done repeatedly or improperly.

PCGS guarantees that all United States and World coins submitted to it shall be graded in accordance with the PCGS grading standards and under the procedures of PCGS. In addition; All U.S. and World coins graded and encapsulated by PCGS are guaranteed genuine.

Because PCGS and NGC have been known to deliver consistent and conservative grading to coins, they are regarded as the top tier – with PCGS being the most respected grading service. Coins graded by these companies should be in their own company's holder with a grading certificate.

TPG's, at least NGC and PCGS, tend to return by Registered mail. So that is safe as well.

PCGS Restoration will never add, remove or alter metal. This includes engaging in well-known “coin doctoring” practices such as smoothing, whizzing, polishing, engraving, etc. Issues such as scratches, dings, planchet flaws or bending will not be addressed.

On one hand, grading can provide valuable information about a coin's condition and history. On the other hand, it can be expensive, and there is no guarantee that the grade will be what the collector expects.

No. As a third-party authentication and grading company, PCGS does not buy, sell, value, or appraise coins. PCGS does offer the PCGS Price Guide, a compiled database of the latest sales prices reported to PCGS by a respected auction house, EBay, or PCGS Authorized Dealers.

Certified coins have the rarity factor

You can usually watch them become worth more over time as the available coins like it fall into private hands and fewer and fewer of them remain available for sale. When that rarity causes interest to grow, the value of your investment grows with it.

Coin collectors will often pay a little more for a graded version of these coins, if they feature a particularly high grade. Bullion coins are sometimes graded if they are from a first batch of coins and are in particularly nice condition.
