Reese Atwood’s second-inning home run lights fuse as Texas wins seventh straight game

ORLANDO, Fla. –The University of Texas softball program's trip to the Sunshine State began with a 10-run victory on Wednesday night and concluded on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 win over UCF to cap a three-game sweep of the Knights as well as a 4-0 week in Florida.

Much like the Longhorns' victory in Tallahassee earlier in the week, Reese Atwood and Mac Morgan left their marks on the softball diamond at UCF Softball Complex throughout Sunday's contest. Atwood's solo home run on a 1-1 pitch to begin the top of the second gave the Longhorns a 1-0 lead, but it was a lead UT did not relinquish throughout the remainder of game.

Morgan (8-0) was the main reason UCF (14-14, 2-7) did not have any offensive success as the Missouri native held the Knights to just two hits — both singles — and did not issue a walk or hit a batter. She tossed 51 pitches to 14 batters and recorded six flyouts and five ground ball outs, before giving way to Sophia Simpson to start the fifth.

UCF plated one run against Simpson and had the bases loaded with two away in the fifth, but Teagan Kavan (S, 2) struck out a batter on five pitches to end the scoring threat. The Knights did not get a baserunner off Kavan for the remainder of the game.

FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE

"We had some good pitching throughout the weekend along with some great defense, I think, and some timely hitting from different people throughout the lineup. It was nice to see Viviana (Martinez) get a few hits this weekend. But anytime you can go on the road and open the week with a big win at FSU and then win three games this weekend, it was a big week."

GAME NOTES

  • Dating back to a relief appearance at LSU on Tuesday, March 12, Texas pitcher Mac Morgan has not allowed a run to score in 17.2 consecutive innings pitched over five appearances.
    • The streak is the second longest by a Texas softball student-athlete this season after Teagan Kavan kept opponents out of the run column for 25.1 consecutive frames from Feb. 16 to March 4.
  • Entering a 3-1 game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Teagan Kavan went on to retire all seven batters faced en route to her second save on the season and first since a nine-pitch relief appearance against Louisiana on Feb. 25, 2024.
  • By scoring two runs in the top of the third on Sunday afternoon, Texas has now outscored its opponents, 79-6, during a game's third inning.
  • Texas also moves to 25-0 this season when scoring first following a second-inning solo home run off the bat of Reese Atwood.
  • With her one-out single in the top of the third, first-year Longhorn Joley Mitchell extended her on-base streak to 17 consecutive games, which is the third-longest streak by a Texas softball student-athlete as both Katie Stewart and Mia Scott have recorded 19-game streaks.
  • Reese Atwood's second-inning home run was her 12th on the season, which is one more than she had in 172 official plate appearances as a freshman throughout the 2023 season.
  • Bella Dayton's run-scoring double in the top of the third was the 100th hit for the Wylie, Texas native as a member of the Texas Longhorn softball program.

UP NEXT

  • Texas (28-3, 8-1) will continue its time away from the Forty Acres as the Longhorns are slated for a three-game series in Stillwater, Okla., where UT will play No. 4/6 Oklahoma State (26-5, 7-2) beginning at 6 p.m. CT on Thursday, March 28.
    • The three-game series will conclude on Saturday, March 30, when the two teams will meet at 1 p.m. CT. In the middle of the Thursday and Saturday matchups is a Friday night contest slated to be broadcaston ESPN2 at 7 p.m. CT.
