Abstract

Graham’s first years as UNC president were embroiled in controversy. The legislature required a consolidation of all senior public universities in North Carolina, which included the UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State College, and the North Carolina College for Women. At the same time, academic and free speech issues emerged after a visit to Chapel Hill from Black poet Langston Hughes, while Graham’s sympathy for organized labor got him into hot water with the state’s business leaders. Finally, Graham’s support for reforming college sports made him unpopular among sports fans who were UNC alumni.
